Our Mission
Alpha Tau Omega was founded to create a fraternity built on values, character, and brotherhood, not status or exclusivity.
Alpha Tau Omega was founded in 1865 at the Virginia Military Institute, at the end of the Civil War. Its founder, Otis Allan Glazebrook, believed college men needed a brotherhood that emphasized leadership, integrity, service, and unity during a time when the country—and campuses—were deeply divided.
The core idea was simple but powerful:
ATO would be a values-based fraternity where men were united by principles and purpose, not background, wealth, or rank.
That belief still defines ATO today:
Brotherhood rooted in respect and accountability
A commitment to developing leaders
A focus on service, character, and lifelong connection
Unity in moments when division is easiest
ATO was founded to build better men and stronger communities—together.
